R. F. Tilney & Son Ltd. (known locally as Tilney's) Worthing's largest and oldest established stationery and office equipment shop was first opened in 1878 by R. F. Tilney's grandfather as a newsagents and stationers at 31 Ship Street in Brighton. In 1955 Bob Tilney branched out to 235 Tarring Road in Worthing, selling office equipment, commercial stationery and printing. Then in 1968 it was decided to put everything under one roof and the firm moved to its current location at 49-56 New Broadway on Tarring Road. Here an abundance of stationery items and a huge range of office furniture is available over two floors, with literally thousands more items available to order. Bob Tilney continued to run the business until 1982 when he retired and handed it over to his daughter Ann (a fourth generation Tilney). Ann still runs the business today. Even after retirement Bob Tilney kept a keen interest in the business right up until his death in October 2008 at the grand old age of 91.
